Reading Cash Variance Without the Noise
Cash variance meetings often stall on lines that look large but reverse next week. Timing differences dominate early closes; structural errors hide underneath. Separating the two is not a formatting choice—it is the only way a committee can decide what to fix.
Start with a materiality threshold tied to cash, not to P&L. A £40,000 timing slip on receipts may be operationally boring; the same amount of unexplained supplier prepayment is not. Thresholds force the pack to spotlight decisions rather than every decimal.
Then require a source for every material line: bank posting, ledger batch, or forecast assumption. Narratives without sources belong in a parking lot, not in the board pack.
Teams that adopt this discipline spend less time defending the spreadsheet and more time choosing which collections, payment runs, or forecast rules to change.
